What is Net-Zero? Definition and Context

Credibility Check & Framework Comparison

To ensure absolute regulatory accuracy and reliability, we verify definitions across leading international frameworks before presenting our synthesized SME context.

SBTi

"The state of achieving a state of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by reducing emissions in line with 1.5°C pathways and neutralizing residual emissions."

IPCC

"A condition in which greenhouse gas emissions entering the atmosphere are balanced by an equivalent amount being removed."

EFRAG / ESRS E1

"Disclosures regarding emission reduction targets and pathways aimed at achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or earlier."

ExecutESG Consolidated Definition

Net-Zero

Net-Zero represents the ultimate goal of corporate climate action, aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the Paris Agreement (limiting global warming to 1.5°C).

SBTi Net-Zero Requirements:

  1. Deep Decarbonization: Companies must reduce absolute emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 by at least 90% by 2050 (from a base year).
  2. Neutralization: The remaining <10% of residual emissions must be neutralized using permanent carbon removals (carbon capture and geological sequestration).
  3. No Offsets for Reductions: Voluntary offsets cannot count towards meeting reduction targets.

SME Relevance & B2B Inbound Action:

SMEs can set near-term science-based targets (typically 50% reduction by 2030) using simplified SBTi tracks. Document your transition plan and emission trajectories in Aura Act.
