Sustainability Skills for the Future of Work: Key Takeaways from Our Partner Webinar

Every forward-thinking leader understands that corporate sustainability is no longer optional. With the arrival of the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the simplified Voluntary SME (VSME) standards, organizations are facing unprecedented compliance pressure.

However, a massive gap remains in the market today: How do you translate high-level corporate ESG goals into concrete, day-to-day role clarity for your employees?

To answer this question, Learnsy, in partnership with the EIT Campus, hosted a highly collaborative panel discussion titled "Sustainability Skills for the Future of Work: An HR & ESG Perspective" on May 19, 2026. The panel brought together diverse voices from technology, education, and human resources:

  • Jussi Simolin (CEO & Founder, ExecutESG)
  • Suvi Ferraz (CEO & Founder, Learnsy)
  • Luisa Esposito (EIT Campus)
  • Pippi Blomqvist (Founder & Consultant, Tide Consulting)
  • Moderated by: Florence Ranson

ExecutESG actively participated in this dialogue to explore how upskilling, cross-functional collaboration, and human psychology can bridge the strategic gap. Below is a comprehensive breakdown of the four most significant takeaways from the panel discussion.

1. Upskilling & Reskilling: The Engine of ESG Execution 📈

High-level sustainability targets are useless if your workforce does not have the skills to execute them. Suvi Ferraz and the Learnsy team emphasized that upskilling is the mechanical engine of the green transition.

The Key Insight:

Many companies treat sustainability as an abstract administrative exercise. Real progress occurs when organizations systematically identify "green skill gaps" across existing roles. For example, a procurement manager doesn't just need to know that the company wants to reduce Scope 3 emissions—they need the specific skill to evaluate a supplier's circular economy capabilities during tenders. Bridging the gap requires translating targets into concrete, role-specific learning paths.

2. Inclusive Learning: Fostering Equity Across the Organization 👥

A common pitfall in corporate sustainability is that knowledge is locked inside the C-suite or a isolated sustainability department. Luisa Esposito from the EIT Campus shared valuable perspectives on democratizing access to sustainability education.

The Key Insight:

For a sustainability strategy to succeed, learning must be inclusive and equitable. Every single employee—from the frontline warehouse operator to the CFO—must understand how their day-to-day decisions influence the company's footprint. The EIT Campus actively supports this by providing accessible, structured educational resources designed to build green literacy across all tiers of the European economy.

3. Silo Busting: Bringing HR, Sustainability, and Operations Together 🔗

Sustainability is often isolated from human resource planning, leading to a disconnect between corporate messaging and talent management. Pippi Blomqvist of Tide Consulting highlighted the urgent need for cross-functional alignment.

The Key Insight:

HR and Sustainability must become strategic partners. HR represents the organizational "connective tissue" that governs recruitment, onboarding, performance metrics, and cultural alignment. If your company's onboarding program does not introduce new hires to your sustainability values, and if employee bonuses are not tied to ESG milestones, your strategy remains a paper tiger. Breaking down the silos between HR, Operations, and Sustainability is a prerequisite for genuine execution.

4. Human-Centric Sustainability: The Psychology of Alignment 🧠

At ExecutESG, we believe that compliance should be a natural byproduct of good leadership, not the primary driver. During the panel, Jussi Simolin introduced how the platform leverages Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to build true strategic ownership.

The Key Insight:

People do not commit to a strategy because they are handed a bureaucratic compliance checklist. True commitment is an emergent outcome of three basic psychological needs:

  • Autonomy: Giving leadership teams and employees the agency to make their own choices.
  • Competence: Equipping them with smart, intuitive tools (like ExecutESG's guided wizards and automated GHG calculations) so they feel capable of doing the work.
  • Relatedness: Connecting their individual tasks to a shared organizational purpose and pride.

By designing sustainability software around human psychology rather than just regulatory checkboxes, we help organizations transition from "something we have to do" to "something we are proud of."
