VSME Metrics That Matter: A Prioritization Guide for SME Suppliers
As large corporations face the strict requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), they are increasingly passing the pressure down to their value chains. The Three-Module Structure of VSME
To prioritize effectively, you must first understand the modular structure of the VSME standard:
- The Basic Module: The mandatory baseline for any company claiming alignment with VSME. It contains only quantitative, calculation-focused metrics and requires no materiality assessment.
- The PAT (Policies, Actions, and Targets) Module: An optional module for SMEs that have already established formal sustainability strategies.
- The BP (Business Partners) Module: An optional module containing the metrics most commonly requested by value chain partners (such as large corporate buyers, banks, and investors).
Step 1: Start with the Basic Module (Non-Negotiable)
If your company has never reported on sustainability before, 100% of your initial focus should be on the Basic Module. Do not touch the PAT or BP modules until these core metrics are fully resolved.
The Basic Module requires data on:
- Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Calculating your Scope 1 (direct fuel) and Scope 2 (purchased electricity) carbon footprint.
- Energy Consumption: Disclosing total energy consumption in MWh and the percentage of renewable energy.
- Workforce Metrics: Disclosing headcount split by gender, type of contract, and lost-time injury rates.
- Basic Governance: Declaring whether the company has policies in place regarding anti-corruption and bribery.

Step 2: Prioritize Based on Buyer Pressure (The BP Module)
If you are reporting because a major buyer is demanding data, your next priority is the Business Partners (BP) Module. However, you should not report on every metric in the BP module—only those explicitly requested.
Ask your buyer which of these three high-intent vectors they are scoring:
- Scope 3 Value Chain Emissions: Corporate buyers under CSRD are legally required to report their Scope 3 footprint. They will prioritize suppliers who can provide actual carbon data for the products purchased.
- Social and Labor Policies: Many buyers look for basic declarations on human rights and collective bargaining coverage to shield themselves from supply chain scandals.
- Hazardous Substances and Waste: If you are in manufacturing, construction, or chemicals, waste recovery rates and chemical usage will be heavily weighted.
Step 3: Avoid the PAT Module Trap
A common mistake made by SMEs is attempting to report under the PAT (Policies, Actions, and Targets) module because they believe it makes them look more sustainable.
In reality, drafting policies on biodiversity, resource use, and circular economy is extremely resource-intensive. Unless you have a dedicated sustainability manager, leave the PAT module disabled. Buyers rarely score the qualitative policies of small suppliers; they care about clean, audit-ready data.
